ADJUSTING BASIC POSITION OF CAMSHAFTS |

Crankshaft |
Align the crank to 30 BTDC on Number 1 cylinder
NOTE: Setting the crankshaft at 30 BTDC allows the camshaft to be rotated without valve damage. |
Chain tensioner |
Remove the chain tensioner and reset it to first click position. |
Front cover and top guide rail |
Remove front cover |
Exhaust camshaft sprocket |
Unbolt, and remove. |
Camshaft |
Turn the camshafts until the 4mm holes in the camshaft flanges line up with the top edge of the cylinder head. |
Pins |
Insert 4mm pins or bolts into holes locking camshaft from turning. |
Crankshaft |
Rotate in direction of rotation of engine to TDC position of cylinder 1 |
Camshaft adjuster |
Turn adjuster by hand in direction of rotation of camshaft to "retarded" position stop. |
Timing chain |
Install chain on the intake sprocket and make sure chain is tight and chain is resting correctly against guide rail in timing case cover. |
Exhaust camshaft sprocket |
Install exhaust sprocket keeping chain tight from the intake cam. |

Checking timing |
Rotate engine 10 times. Position at TDC and with a wrench rotate the intake cam clockwise till stop. All 4mm holes should line up with the top edge of the cylinder head. |
